Numbers 4 – Saved to Serve

Have you figured out what is your gift? The gift that can be of service of God is precious to our God. If you haven’t discovered your gifts, pray for them, and God will answer you accordingly. He has work for each one of us, He wants us to be busy with Him Let us explore what kind of jobs were assigned to the Israelites:

1Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2“Record the names of the members of the clans and families of the Kohathite division of the tribe of Levi. 3 List all the men between the ages of thirty and fifty who are eligible to serve in the Tabernacle. 4“The duties of the Kohathites at the Tabernacle will relate to the most sacred objects.

21And the Lord said to Moses, 22“Record the names of the members of the clans and families of the Gershonite division of the tribe of Levi. 23List all the men between the ages of thirty and fifty who are eligible to serve in the Tabernacle. 24“These Gershonite clans will be responsible for general service and carrying loads.

29“Now record the names of the members of the clans and families of the Merarite division of the tribe of Levi. 30List all the men between the ages of thirty and fifty who are eligible to serve in the Tabernacle.

31“Their only duty at the Tabernacle will be to carry loads. They will carry the frames of the Tabernacle, the crossbars, the posts, and the bases;

34So Moses, Aaron, and the other leaders of the community listed the members of the Kohathite division by their clans and families. 35The list included all the men between thirty and fifty years of age who were eligible for service in the Tabernacle, 36and the total number came to 2,750.

38The Gershonite division was also listed by its clans and families.39The list included all the men between thirty and fifty years of age who were eligible for service in the Tabernacle, 40and the total number came to 2,630. 42The Merarite division was also listed by its clans and families.43The list included all the men between thirty and fifty years of age who were eligible for service in the Tabernacle, 44and the total number came to 3,200.

46So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel listed all the Levites by their clans and families. 47All the men between thirty and fifty years of age who were eligible for service in the Tabernacle and for its transportation 48numbered 8,580. 49When their names were recorded, as the Lord had commanded through Moses, each man was assigned his task and told what to carry. And so the registration was completed, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Life would be pretty boring if we didn’t have things to do. Most people, we have to do even the things that we don’t like for various reasons. For example, I don’t like eating some vegetable and fruits, but I am asked to so I do it anyway. The men in this chapter were called and assigned a particular job in the Lord’s sanctuary. Their thoughts are not recorded so we do not know if they were jumping out of joy because now they had to transport things, but because God choose them He qualified them for the job. It must have been a privilege to serve God directly in the most Holy structure every created by God. When God calls us to do His will, it may not be ours, but we should not go against His will. Moses set a good example; he followed the exact directions of God. However, we have the best example because even Moses failed, I speak of Jesus Christ. He set the example for serving others. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Christ put aside His own interest and feelings and committed Himself completely to His mission of rescue. We have been set free from slavery to sin by His sacrifice and grace. Let your hands and heart preach the Gospel. Love for our Redeemer obligates us. We have been saved to serve.

God Bless,
