Balak had a large army; he could have attacked the Israelites, but he was much smarter than that to try on his own. He teams up with the Midianites, traditional enemies. You know the saying “my enemy’s enemy is a friend to me.” Yet, Balak does not stop there; he tries to elicit the help from the divine through Balaam. It seems tthe cards are stack in favor of Balak and his coalition; 3 against 1. But we will learn a wonderful lesson that still applies to us today.
Numbers 22:7, 17-18, 12.
“So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak.or I will certainly honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’” Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more…”And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”
Im sure that if we asked the Israelites what happened they would response like this “What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). As long as God was with them no one could harm them. That’s if they continued to stay in God’s protection. “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). It was because of God’s love and plan for their lives that God protected them. Friends it is the same thing for all of us. God loves us and is willing to protect us. He has plan for your life. Do you want to follow that plan? if you do the scriptures says this about you “No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the Lord” (Isaiah 54:17)
