Psalms 8 – Who Are We?

Ever wondered where God is? Smell the flowers, breath, look around you, hear the wind, hear a baby laugh, taste a rain drop…all are evidence God exists, all speak of His love, all are created and sustained by our Creator.

1Oh Lord, our Lord,

How majestic is Your name in all the earth,

Who have [a]displayed Your splendor above the heavens!

2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established [b]strength

Because of Your adversaries,

To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.

3 When I [c]consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,

The moon and the stars, which You have [d]ordained;

4 What is man that You [e]take thought of him,

And the son of man that You care for him?

5 Yet You have made him a little lower than [f]God,

And You crown him with glory and majesty!

6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands;

You have put all things under his feet,

7 All sheep and oxen,

And also the [g]beasts of the field,

8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,

Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

9 O Lord, our Lord,

How majestic is Your name in all the earth!

Psalms are my favorite readings any day, any time! David, the psalmist seeks to give God the glory because His glory shines in our lower world. He is ours for He made us, protects us, takes special care of us, and we are His. The birth, life, preaching, miracles, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus are known through the world. No name is so universal, no power and influence so generally felt, as those of the Saviour of mankind. But how much brighter it shines in the heavens! We, on this earth, only hear God’s excellent name, and praise that; but the angels are blessed to see His glory, and praise Him face to face! Sometimes the grace of God appears wonderfully in kids. Sometimes the power of God makes great things happen in his church, by very weak and unlikely instruments and that the excellency of the power might the more evidently appear to be of God, and not of man. What is man, so mean a creature, that he should be so honored to have a loving merciful kind God! We are sinful creatures yet He has showed mercy upon thousands who love Him and keep His commandments! Man has been given sovereign dominion over the inferior creatures, under God. The greatest favor ever showed to the human race, and the greatest honor ever put upon human nature, were exemplified in the Lord Jesus. With good reason does the psalmist conclude as he began, Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth. What words can reach his praises, how do you praise and honor God in your life?
