Psalm 25 – Please Forget This!

I grew up singing this psalm! Music is an awesome way to memorize scripture! Here’s the way I learned it:

………………………………………

Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

Chorus:

O my God, I trust in Thee: Let me not be ashamed

Let not mine enemies triumph over me.

Yea, let none that wait on Thee be ashamed.

Yea, let none that wait on Thee be ashamed.

(Chorus)

Show me Thy ways, Thy ways O Lord.

Show me Thy ways, Thy ways O Lord.

(Chorus)

Remember not the sins of my youth.

Remember not the sins of my youth.

(Chorus)

I think the one text that jumps out at me from this psalm is verse 7:

“Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions:

According to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O Lord.” (KJV)

In a more modern version it says:

“Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;

According to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O Lord!” (NRSV)

I’m sure that both you and I have made mistakes that we wished we could forget! I know that in my life, there are many things that I wish could be erased from my memory. The amazing thing of all this is that God does erase things from His memory. If we confess our sins, He forgives them and forgets them no more—even throws them down into the symbolic depths of the sea! What an amazing God we serve! After this He doesn’t see us for those “sins of our youth,” but instead He sees His own goodness and righteousness!

Father, “Please forget this—the sins I committed in the past! Instead, because of Your love, remember me for Your goodness sake!” Amen.
