It is easy to know all the right answers and still be rude. For example, in the recent political debates in Washington about funding our government, both sides claim to have the right answers but their spirits are not convincing. They spent most of the time attacking and blaming one another. It is much easier to preach with words and harder to preach through the Spirit (our actions).
But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking (Acts 6:10).
As the the work of the Gospel began to spread throughout the whole world, the enemy of souls did everything in his power to stop it. The Church was growing and with it practical problems; thus it needed church organization. They chose to appoint men full of faith and the Spirit to help prevent and fix problems–Deacons. Stephen was one of those 7 men chosen.
The enemy saw that these new plans would only bring people to Jesus, so he attacked these men in any way possible. In this occasion he brought a group of people who accused Stephen of blasphemy. They had nothing to convict him, so they resorted to false testimony. Lying to do God’s will, what an oxymoron! What stands out to me is the wisdom, but especially the Spirit, that was in Stephen that could not be refuted. They could disagree with Stephen’s version of truth but his body language and power of argument they could not answer.
The same thing is true today, it is not what we say but how we say it that makes the biggest difference; it’s not if you can talk the talk, but if you can walk the walk; it’s not how you preach it, but how you live it. Friends, I want to have a Spirit in me that preaches the truth like Jesus–In Spirit and Truth by Actions. Join with me in asking God to put His Holy Spirit in us.
