Deuteronomy 14 – Because You Are A Holy People

When I was in the Marine Corps, there were several rules that we had to follow that were unspoken rules. Because they were unspoken, you might think that if they were broken, most Marines would just let them go by. Oh, no!!! If you were caught breaking one of these rules, to put it nicely, someone would talk to you. Some of the rules are: you cannot have your hands in your pockets, you cannot walk and chew at the same time, and you cannot walk on grass if there is sidewalk near you. Why? Because you are a Marine!!!

You are the sons of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave your forehead for the sake of the dead. For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. (Deuteronomy 14:1-2)

Read Moses’ entire speech!

Even as a Marine (jarhead) I would think twice about these “laws,” but at the end of the day, I did them and enforced them because it was the social norm.

Before we discover God’s instructions for the Israelites found in this chapter, God gives them an identity: “You are My children and you are a holy people” (set apart for a purpose). Wow!!! God tells them that He adopted them into His family. How does that change the way that they looked at God and how they responded to Him? Do you think that this helped determine their perspective on life?

When God calls you child...

In those times, people who worshiped gods saw them as the masters. Whatever they requested, the people had no choice but to obey, even to the point of sacrificing their infants. So to hear that an all powerful Being who has demonstrated that He has power beyond all other gods and who claims to be the Creator calls you His child is revolutionary.

That’s one reason I think that they had no problem doing what God told them to do. “Unclean meats? Sure no problem!” “A tithe? Father as You will.” Being a Marine motivated me to an extent, but being a child of God–even further.

Is God asking or telling you to do something, today? Are you willing to do it because His is your Father and you His child?
