Laws! Why do we have to have them? There are a lot of answers for that simple question. For example, if we did not have the law of gravity, what kind of existence would we have? Everyone and everything would just float mindlessly throughout the air; sort of like outer space. Some say that laws are like walls that prevent us from having real freedom. Is that the case? I think not. Let’s think about one of the Ten Commandments. Do not steal–would we really be free if that was not a law? No, because I would be terrified that someone may jack all my possessions. Without it I would not live any freer; but because it is part of God’s law I have confidence to leave my door unlock among those who keep that commandment. So am I free with the law or without it? You are the judge, but let’s look at this chapter and examine the kind of laws Moses gave them and think about what it reveals about God! 🙂
“You shall not see your countryman’s ox or his sheep straying away, and pay no attention to them; you shall certainly bring them back to your countryman” Deuteronomy 22:1
“But you shall do nothing to the girl; there is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case” Deuteronomy 22:26
This chapter is broken down in two sections: Laws on many topics, and laws regarding mostly virgins and matrimony.
The first part is exciting, can you imagine a society where everyone looks out for their neighbors? Where people do the best for each other and do not take advantage of one another? Or the people are considerate of animals?
The second part, as I really see it, are laws being given to protect women, especially from immoral men. That is amazing because they lived in a time and place when women were considered worthless for any purpose other than child bearing. But this was not the case in Israel.
What does this say about God? God did not want His “holy people” to be like everybody else. He calls us to a higher ethical life. Re-examine this chapter and see if this is true!
