Isaiah 44 – Poof!

One night during family worship, my dad was reading from a devotional book—the kind that has a devotional designated for every day of the year. I’m not exactly sure what this one was about, or which book it was, or who wrote it. All I remember was that the word, “poof,” was in there. “Poof” is not a word you typically hear in a devotional reading. It’s not in any Bible translation—not even The Message or The Voice! So when my dad read the word, “poof,” he started to chuckle! We all started to chuckle, startled just slightly by such an awkward word to have in a devotional reading.

If there ever was a place in the Bible for the word,, “poof,” it would be in this passage of Isaiah 44. The word, “poof,” according to dictionary.com, is an interjection “used to express or indicate a sudden disappearance.” See if you can find where I might place “poof” in the passage:

Remember these things, O Jacob,
and Israel, for you are My servant;
I formed you; you are my servant;
O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me.
I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud
and your sins like mist;
return to Me, for I have redeemed you.
Isaiah 44:21-22

Did you figure it out? Of course it would go something like this:

O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me.
I have blotted out your transgressions—poof!—like a cloud
and your sins like mist;
return to Me, for I have redeemed you.

Yes, God’s blotting out of our sins is instantaneous! Just like a cloud vanishing or mist from a waterfall.

Isaiah 44The picture in this blog is of Vernal Falls, on the famous Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park. I took this picture last month, January 2014, when the water was much lower than normal. The last time I hiked the trail was in 2011, when the water was much higher than normal. The trail is called Mist Trail because as you hike up the long staircases, it’s impossible not to get wet! The water from the waterfall becomes a mist as it hits the rocks, and poof—it vanishes into thin air! You couldn’t collect all that water and dump it back into the river even you really wanted to!

And that’s what God does with your sins when you ask Him to take them from you. They disappear suddenly, instantaneously. Poof! Vanished!
