Isaiah 48 – God’s Valentine

“Listen to me, O Jacob,
and Israel, whom I called!
I am He; I am the first,
and I am the last.
My hand laid the foundation of the earth,
and my right hand spread out the heavens;
when I call to them,
they stand forth together.

“Assemble, all of you, and listen!
Who among them has declared these things?
The Lord loves him.”
Isaiah 48:12-14

Isaiah 48

What better valentine is there than to know that the Lord loves you? I can’t think of any. We know that God’s love is unconditional, and that there is no being in the universe that He does not love. This verse shows us that God especially loves those who tell others about Him.

Is God your friend? I would hope that He is. God wants to give you a special valentine—a special blessing for you. All He asks is that you share Him with others. If you really love someone, you won’t try to keep your love for them a secret, will you? In the same way, if we really love God, we won’t try to keep the fact that we love Him a secret from others.

Jesus said that if we really loved Him, we would keep His commandments (John 14:15). Isaiah says the same thing here in the Old Testament. Love is an action word. If you really love God, you will show it by your actions! And when you show God that you love Him by your actions He will bless you—give you the biggest valentine you ever thought you could have.

“Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments!
Then your peace would have been like a river,
and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;
your offspring would have been like the sand,
and your descendants like its grains;
their name would never be cut off
or destroyed from before me.”
Isaiah 48:18-19

Peace, righteousness, descendants, and a never-ending family—these are the gifts God would have given to the Israelites had they followed His commandments. He wants to give those gifts to you, too. And good news—He knows that you can’t keep His commandments on your own. That’s why He sent His Son Jesus to this world, so that He could live that life for you, and then die to forever win the victory over sin. Today God wants to give you the greatest valentine of all. He wants to give you His Son to live in and through you.

Will you accept the valentine?
