If you could know one thing and one thing only, what would you choose? The numbers to the next Super Lotto? The way to develop Cold Fusion? Or maybe the meaning of Life? Paul made his choice and shared this with the people at Corinth. Let’s read . . .
“For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”
1 Cor 2:2
Why is it that Paul chose to know nothing but Jesus crucified among the Corinthians? It’s interesting how they say, “Success comes after failure.” In the case for Paul, Corinth came after Athens. At Athens Paul attempted to win people for Christ by meeting logic with logic and philosophy with philosophy, but this method produced very little fruit: “But some men joined him and believed” Acts 17:34. When he came to Corinth, he had learned his lesson; he told them that he did not come in “superiority of speech or wisdom” to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He learned that those methods do not melt the human heart that is wrapped up in selfishness. Only one thing can accomplish that; only Jesus dying on the Cross, the sinless God in human flesh can melt the heart.
Is it practical for the 21st century, to express ourselves in the same manner?
Paul continues in verse 3-5:
“I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.”
I think it is because Paul’s year and half at Corinth did not consist of him only talking but also demonstrating the Gospel through “Spirit and power” meaning words and actions. You can be a strong witness like Paul. Have you decided to know nothing but Jesus crucified? Where you are, it can be your Corinth. Ask God to fill you with the Spirit so you can also witness in a powerful way! But remember the key to success, the meaning of life is to live a life for Jesus, because He was crucified, buried, and rose again. He lives and He will come soon for us.
