Romans 2 – Bad Christians, Righteous Pagans?

People hate God because of you.

Sound harsh? That’s what Paul told the Christians in Rome! In Romans 1, Paul praised the Roman Christians saying, “Your faith is proclaimed in all the world” (verse 8). Here in Chapter 2, Paul berates them.

For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
Romans 2:24

And what specifically have these Roman Christians done to make the Pagans hate them?

Romans 2You then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law.
Romans 2:21-23

The Roman Christians were very faithful teachers of the law of God. They taught the new converts to keep God’s law, but they were not keeping it themselves! Paul calls the Roman Christians, and us as well, away from hypocrisy.

I find fascinating the places in the Bible where God gives hope for those who don’t know Him. Here in this chapter, while Paul tells the Roman Christians that they need to start actually practicing what they preach, he also explains that there are some who are keeping the law, even without knowing it.

For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
Romans 2:14-16

The Holy Spirit is actively working to transform the hearts of all people. Some know Him, others do not. Some claim to be His followers, but do not do what He asks. Some do not think they are His followers, and may not even know Him, but they are following what they know is right, which is His law.

And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
John 10:16

Do you want to be part of His flock? Actions speak louder than words, but don’t worry! God can transform your actions!

Why don’t you let Him in today?
