Daniel 1 – Daniel and the Health Message

Daniel 1Our lifestyle has far more to do with our mental, physical, and spiritual prosperity than most realize. How is your lifestyle?

King Nebuchadnezzar had just besieged Jerusalem and carried away many vessels and the children of Israel captive. Among those taken captive were princes of Judah including Daniel and his companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Thinking that his meat and wine would make these princes into material fit for the Babylonian courts, the king apportioned his provision to the Israelite captives. These four compatriots had a choice to make: either go along in doing that which they knew was against the principles God had given His people as to not offend (which is what the rest of the Israelite captives were doing all around them), or stand by a purpose true, obeying the light God had shown Israel in regards to lifestyle principles with whatever consequences may come.

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank.” (vs. 8)

Taking a bold stance for God’s truth, the prince of the eunuchs was frightened that such a stance (beyond worldly reason) would bring disastrous results. Daniel asked for just ten days for him and his friends sustaining on pulse (plant-based food) and water to show what God could do. Daniel was only following the diet God portioned to humanity at the beginning–a plant-based diet (Gen. 1:29).  “And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.” God blessed these faithful soldiers of the cross abundantly for their bold stance that flew in the face of the course of the other compromising Israelites and the worldly wisdom of Babylon: “As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. . . . And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.” I also think it noteworthy that the only Israelites recorded faithful in obeying God’s light on health reform were the same few who, recorded a couple chapters late, were the only few with the moral strength to refuse to bow to the image in the face of death.

God has poured out much light in regards to health for His people in these last days to be nothing but a blessing for them and to help them stand the final test that is to come upon this earth. Those with unhealthy habits do not allow for the delicate machinery of the brain to work as it should so that they may comprehend the voice of God in these last days clear enough, and have moral strength to dare to be a Daniel against the compromise and treason on every hand. Those who defile themselves in transgressing the laws of their being comprehend little how much damage they do to their own witness, and how much the results of their carelessness in lifestyle choices cut off great blessings by which God is yearning to bestow. While those who sow the good seed of righteous lifestyle choices reap an increasingly better harvest unto eternity.

May you ever purpose in your heart to obey the light of God’s health principles to reap great blessings,

Jeffrey Maxwell

  1. Reblogged this on chrisaomministries and commented:
Interesting thoughts! However Abraham ate beef, and served some to God Himself, the father of the prodigal killed the fatted calf, and Jesus served a breakfast of barbecued fish to His disciples after the resurrection. Fruit and vegetables are good, so is meat. Processed foods and junk food is what I avoid. Great article though.

  2. An interesting commentary sir, and some very good advice for those who think that they need only follow the “big“ things in the Bible, whilst ignoring the smaller things will have no consequences to their lives. Little do they realize…God bless.

  3. Praise God. While it is true that God allowed the use of flesh, we must consider that the product thousands of years ago was vastly different than the product of today. Because of the overspreading diseases, pollutants, hormones, antibiotics, other drugs and the effects of cholesterol, when one chooses to subsist upon flesh today, they are taking their own lives into their hands. The original diet given to man had no life being taken (Gen. 1:29), and as plant-based foods are widely abundant today, there is no necessity to be sustained by taking the lives of God’s creatures. The rocks of this world are crying, “Health!” The world is reaping the benefits of a purely plant-based diet and how it cuts across the chronic illnesses of today such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancers (i.e. Forks over Knives). I have seen in my own life, in mental clarity and strength and vitality, the contrast between a relatively healthy diet including flesh, and the far better choice of abstaining.
